Date: February 14, 2012
City: Oakland, CA
Venue: Fox Theater
Artist: Lenny Kravitz
Opening Act(s): Raphael Saadiq
The “Science of Rock-n-Roll” exhibit in Kansas City mentioned “Music Goggles” (see photo below). While I don’t personally find Lenny Kravitz all that attractive, he definitely does ooze sex appeal on stage.
This concert showed me that Lenny Kravitz is a rock star! His stage set up was not elaborate and it didn’t need to be. He came out and OWNED that stage. The crowd was immediately hooked. I love when performers sound just like their albums. It shows you that they have real talent and don’t need the production studio to make them sound good.
He played a good mix of his older hits and songs from his new album for as long as the Fox Theater would let him. He would look to the side of the stage and ask how much more time he had because he wasn’t ready to go.
I saw Raphael Saadiq at Lollapalooza in 2010. I thought he was fantastic. He and his band were classy in their suits and playing great soul music. I was disappointed in his hometown performance. I get that artists need to grow and update their sound, but the white hoodie didn’t seem to fit.
