City: San Francisco, CA
Artist: The Greening
Opening Act(s): Everyone is Dirty, Sweet Chariot
What can I say about The Greening? They look like the Gallagher brothers with Alice Cooper makeup. Their sound was a mixture of 60s psychedelic, 70s disco, punk and the 80s. They sampled Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets” and The Go-Go’s “We Got the Beat”. It was like experiencing ADHD through music.
I had such hope for Oakland-based Everyone is Dirty when I saw the violin. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Their music was all over the place and the violin didn’t add anything of value. Lead singer Sivan Gur-Arieh sings in a whisper voice, which has never been my favorite type of singing.
Sweet Chariot, a rock band from San Francisco, opened up the show. Lead singer, Eric Shea’s voice was strong and powerful. Their sound was very southern. I loved them the moment they started, but they sealed the deal with “My California”.
