I grew up with my mom listening to Johnny Mathis records. My sister was kind enough to drive my mom the three or so hours to San Francisco so that we could take her to see him perform with the San Francisco Symphony.
The show started with the San Francisco Symphony performing George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris”. Outstanding! I can’t say enough about the acoustics at Davies Symphony Hall and the talent of our symphony.
There was a short intermission before Johnny Mathis came out to sing his biggest hits. At 78 years old I was surprised that his voice sounded just like it did on his records. He even held his notes just like when he was young. Being backed by the San Francisco Symphony made the experience that much better.
He performed all of his biggest hits including “Changes Are”, “Misty”, “Moon River”, “Gina”, “It’s Not for Me to Say”, “The Twelfth of Never”, “No Love (But Your Love)”, and “A Certain Smile”. The audience would start to clap after the first few notes of each song would begin to play.
Johnny Mathis songs are classics that can instantly take you back to a moment in time. For me it’s childhood but for most of the people in the audience I know it takes them back to their first dates, falling in love, and dancing at their weddings.
I’m very happy to have been able to share this night with my mom and sister.
